How to be a Better Version of Yourself and Win Big by Imeh David

Life is like an ocean, an abundance of water that can’t dry up. In this ocean of life, different people go with different containers to fetch the water. Some go with tea cups, some with table spoons. Others go with buckets, and some with drums. There’re those who also go to this ocean with tankers.

The big winners go with drums and tankers. The interesting question is, why do some go with tea cups and others go with tankers? Why the big differentials in results in life? Much as everyone is entitled to winning big, why do some people settle for small stakes and little results? We shall soon see the answers.

Until we become more, we can’t get more

Getting more is winning big in life. But getting more is only the effect, becoming more is the cause. This is what Abhishek Ratna, an image consultant and a success coach, means when he states that, “A key criterion to be successful in any field is the desire to continually strive to be a better version of yourself.”

As science, technology, and business offer us more and more, everyone gets a desire to get more and more - more convenience, more comfort, more education, more health, more love, more friends, more joy, more understanding, more recognition, more assets, and more money. And to get more, we’ve got to become more.

Jim Rohn would always state that, “To have more than you’ve got, become more than you are.” According to him also, our income rarely exceeds our personal development. Rather, it often corresponds to our degree of personal growth. This implies that we can have more money, for instance, than we have at present because we can become more than we are at the moment.

Becoming more is an inside job

Becoming more is a very fundamental thing. It simply means becoming a better version of yourself at the core. In this adventure, the innermost state of your mind is everything. Your subconscious thought structures play a very important and crucial role here.

One of my  inspirational quotes throws more light on it thus: “Internal qualities of a person – character, core values, spiritual beliefs, thought habits, determination, attitude, courage – are often more responsible for great accomplishments in life far more than external advantages – wealthy background, prestigious university, paper credentials, and so on.”

Sharing the same thought, Emmitt Smith, an American former professional football player, believes that, “For me, winning isn’t something that happens suddenly on the field when the whistle blows and the crowds roar. Winning is something that builds physically and mentally every day that you train and every night that you dream.”

Ratna couldn’t convey this truth in any better way than this, “Stop being incremental! If your system no longer delivers the results you want, don’t go for incremental changes, instead go for complete transformation.” Your heart is a powerful system.

How you can be the better version that qualifies to win big

Ideally, it is not everybody who is qualified to attract success, health, and wealth. It takes ordinary people who become better version of themselves to attract and keep the good things of life – significance, relevance, affluence, fame, and all that.

So instead of wishing that you should have money, houses, cars, lands, recognition, and so on, first desire and strive to become the kind of person who will attract all these things. The tips below will help you become a better version of yourself.

(i) Reconnect with God: Until we know who we are, we can’t be better versions of ourselves. God created man in His own image (Genesis 1:27). So man is a spirit  (image of God) who has a soul, and lives in a body. The organ the spirit uses to know is intuition; the organ the soul uses to know is the mind (where we think, reason, and decide); and the organ the body uses to know is the brain.

Life is real and dynamic. The world is never static. Science is improving. Technology is changing. Businesses are getting transformed. Apps are being updated. All these come with new challenges, almost on a daily basis. Therefore, if man (who is basically a spirit) must fit into the ever-changing scenario and meet all the challenges, he’s got to grow and get better day by day. That is first and foremost, in his spirit. Our spirit must consistently connect and reconnect with God, the Ultimate Spirit. We can’t truly become a better version of ourselves by remaining who we are outside God.

(ii) You are your own biggest project, work on your mind: George Bernard Shaw, an Irish playwright and political activist, wrote that “Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” In my post a few weeks ago on How to Change Your Conditions with Your Thoughts, I explained how the mind works.

The thoughts we repeatedly think and the feelings we correspondingly generate in the conscious mind eventually slip into the subconscious mind and are stored up there. They become our habit of thoughts and habit of feelings. And Moffat Machingura, a life coach, stresses that “You don’t prosper by maintaining standards; you prosper by maintaining habits. You are what you are not because of what you did; but because of what you keep doing.”

New godly, transforming, upgraded, and winning thoughts regularly engaged in, will result in building a better version of yourself. This is because these new winning thoughts trigger winning feelings; winning feelings empower you and drive winning actions, and winning actions produce results. In short, winning big in life is the result of your winning thoughts, feelings, and actions.”

(iii) Establish a daily routine: In building habits, John C. Maxwell, an American author and speaker, is right when he says that, “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” It’s through routines – routines of thought, meditation, reading, work, practice, action - we establish habits. New and upgraded habits make us better versions of ourselves.

(iv) Gratitude: On Quora, Nelson Wang, founder of www.CEOLifestyle, writes an answer about powerful habits that make people become the best version of themselves. One of them is practicing gratitude. Be thankful for all things.
