THE HABITS THAT PRODUCED THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE
Topflight
executives, CEOs, billionaires, millionaires, and highly-rated professionals
don’t go for wealth, status, or fame, first. They start by building great,
success-producing habits, primarily. We first establish our habits, and then
our habits will direct our lives to bring about the results, wealth, success, and
health we desire. This thought is expressed by John Dryden, an English poet,
thus: “We first make our habits, and then
our habits make us.”
It’s
not a very difficult thing to form good and great habits. Mortimer J. Adler, an
American philosopher and educator, explains how we can do it. “Habits are formed by the repetition of
particular acts. They are strengthened by an increase in the number of repeated
acts...” And the bottom line of really forming great habits is to drop all
excuses. Wayne Dyer, a self-help author, explains this as “eliminating the very
system that created, and continues to support these thinking habits.” In his
words, “This system is made up of a long list of explanations and defenses that
can be summed up in one word: excuses.”
The
most successful people don’t give excuses when it comes to forming important
habits, as we’ll soon see. So in your formation of these habits, you must
eliminate all defenses. Remember, when you put great habits first, fantastic
results will follow thereafter.
And
if the rich and successful people must stay rich and remain successful, it must
be by daily practicing certain great habits. According to Jim Ryun, motivation
may get you started but habit is what you sustains your success. These are the top habits that produce great
people and great results.
(1)
Wealthy People Are Goal Oriented:
Based on a study by Thomas C. Corley, in which he interviewed 233 millionaires and 128 poor
individuals over a period of three years, he discovered that the successful
people write down their goals and
focus on accomplishing some single goal. He also found out that 70 percent of
the rich pursue long-term goals.
(2)
They Purposefully Practice A Skill:
Corley further says, over two-thirds, or 69 percent, of the rich in his study
practiced some specific skill for two or more hours every day. They don’t leave anything to chance. They
study intricate details of skills that really make them experts. Particularly
in this digital economy, they know how to take advantage of technology.
(3)
Successful People Have A Routine: They wake up three hours before work. They
listen to audio books while commuting to work as well as read about 30 minutes
or more each day for either education or career purposes. They also network
five or more hours a month. They cultivate rich relationship with other upbeat,
success-conscious people.
(4)
All Very Successful People Are Careful
With Money: They are careful in their spending; they don’t buy things on
impulse. Rather, they delay gratification, and ensure that they purchase
quality products that are really necessary at the lowest possible prices. Also,
instead of wasting money, they focus on building wealth.
(5)
They Are People Oriented: Jeff Bezos
is the richest man in history. He said in an interview that
why he was willing to sacrifice
company profits, and by extension shareholder satisfaction, so that he could
focus on making Amazon increasingly customer-centred was because, "In the
long run, if you take care of customers, that is taking care of
shareholders."
(6) They Exercise Their Mind And Body
Regularly: They exercise their mind by meditating or “sitting for
ideas”. They also exercise physically. Mark Zuckerberg,
the founder of Facebook, said in an interview that, “Staying in shape is very
important. Doing anything well requires energy, and you just have a lot more
energy when you’re fit.” Richard Branson, the CEO of Virgin Group, also
includes exercise into his daily routine.
You can’t kill a frog by dropping it into hot water. Reason
is that it will quickly jump out unhurt. But if you put it in cold water and
warm it until it becomes extremely hot, you have it cooked before it knows it.
The encroachment of bad habits in our lives is very much like this. Therefore,
decide your habits and your habits will decide your success.
