How to Tap the Synergy of the Right Company (Pt. 2) by Imeh David

Outstanding success, business breakthroughs, wealth, and notable career progress are all products of synergy – a combination of average abilities that produce surprisingly far bigger results than the sum of the individual persons.

Breakthroughs are hardly one-man or one-woman ventures. The world is so interconnected and interwoven that none can go as a lone ranger and really make meaningful impact.

Uber is a transportation network company. Spotify is a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs. But the synergy between the two makes possible the personalization of music in rides, and gives the music streaming service far greater reach to customers than would have been achieved individually.

It’s synergy with the right company that works wonders, accelerates energy and multiplies results. Partnering with the wrong company will produce limited and negative results. What then constitutes the right company? How can we build it and synergize it?

The Right Company

The right company, whether it is among friends, professional colleagues, business partners, networks, and more, is a group built around strong company cultures.

At this point, let me bring to bear the difference between company culture and core values. Matt Blumberg, a technology entrepreneur, says that “culture is the collection of business practices, processes, and interactions that make up the work environment”, while “values are the uncompromising core principles that the company is willing to live and die by, the rules of the game.”

He further explains that “If a company’s values are its bedrock, then a company’s culture is the shifting landscape on top of it. Culture is the current embodiment of the values as the needs of the business dictate.”  Today, businesses are dynamic because of technological changes, digital transformations, customer expectations, exponential growth and scaling. These changes mean that businesses, if they must survive, should adjust the way of doing business to match the changing norms and consumption patterns in society.

Your company or business core values – the fundamental beliefs, principles, and standards that drive your business – reflect what all team members stand for. Compelling or convincing adherence to them gives all members in the company a sense of responsibility and accountability. Each decision or action is viewed against the background of whether it reflects the core values.

To this extent, the right company is the one built on group core values, and provides a conducive atmosphere for right decisions. Right decisions help team members to synergize, empower the business to meet customers’ expectations, and enable it to achieve the goals of the company.

Core Values Give Individuals and Businesses a Competitive Advantage

According to Deloitte, 94 percent   of executives and 88 percent of employees believe a distinct workplace culture is important to business success; Forbes found out that companies with strong cultures saw a  4 times increase in revenue growth; while 82 percent of respondents in a Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends survey believe that culture is a potential competitive advantage.

How to build the right company and synergize it for exponential results

(1) Have a solution-providing vision; it should also be widely shared with relevant stakeholders: Vision is what provides a sense of purpose and direction for a business or any adventure. That’s why you have to be very clear about it. “Then the Lord answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it’” - Habakkuk 2:2.

(2) Define the core values and ensure that they’re imbibed by team members: Roope Heinila argues that your core values support the company’s vision and shape its culture, making it therefore, necessary for every single business decision to align with those values.

Since your business core values guide important decision-making, it makes much sense, therefore, for all members of your company or team to imbibe them because it is keeping the values in mind that will enable them make the right decisions to realize the goals of the company.

(3) Develop extraordinary team and know how to harness the strengths of each team member: “Great teams  are developed when team members can communicate openly and share ideas.” One of the most important ways to harness the strengths and create synergy among the right team or company is to put them in the appropriate positions or share roles in a way that best match their talents, skills, training, and so on.

Remember that in combining forces or abilities to scale from different team members, you’ll need to know how to foster collaborative and productive work from diverse talents, various skills, and several people.

In all, we’ve seen that the right company shares the right values or core values. The values provide a moral direction to guide all team members to work responsibly, productively and synergize to scale up and multiply results that can only be described as exponential. In the end, in right company, synergy that is generated makes everyone a big gainer.
