Reasons or Results: Which Do You Want?
The events in the last few months in the world have
caused anxiety, worry, pains, and heartbreaks. People have lost their jobs,
some have lost their loved ones to COVID-19, and others have even lost their
businesses, the very source of their livelihood. But know this, even if you feel that you’ve lost
everything, you still have God and that’s enough to start all over again.
If you’re down or in any way disadvantaged by the
coronavirus pandemic, to start again is not an easy decision; but it’s also not
an impossible decision. Mehmet Murat ildan, a Turkish playwright and novelist,
says that “There are only two options for a ship: either to sail to the sea and
fight with the waves or rot in a port! The same is valid for the man!”
No matter how bad one thinks the situation is, there is
always a way out, an option to be taken to move on. Do you think you’re faced
with a mountain? Even at that Vera Nazarian, an American-Russian science
fiction writer, suggests the following ways:
·
You can climb it and cross to the other
side.
·
You can go around it.
·
You can fly over it.
·
You can blow it up.
·
You can ignore it and pretend it’s not
there.
·
You can turn around and go back the way you
came.
·
Or you can stay on the mountain and make it
a home. There’s always a way out.
History judges us by what we decide, not by the options
we have to choose from. The world judges us by the results we get, not by the
excuses we give. We’re built to produce results, not give reasons. And in life, you either get reasons or results. Reasons
will be forgotten, but results will last.
Our excuses may adversely affect others. We’re supposed
to provide solution to humanity. Our reason why we’ve not given it may hurt and
maim several persons. We’re created as an answer to a society, a community, a
system, or a company. Our justification for the failure to provide the answer
may cause so much injury, deprivation, and stagnation to that entity that looks
up to us.
Indeed, we can actually see many useful, situation-improving,
story-changing, and life-enriching opportunities in the coronavirus challenges.
So, if you’ve lost your job, you can begin again. If your business has gone
down, you can revive it again. If your finance has nose-dived, you can build it
again.
In an earlier post,
I showed how we can see opportunities in our challenges. I stated there that opportunities often present themselves
first as problems. That scientists, inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs
discover opportunities by first seeing human needs that
should be met.
These
human needs pose as difficulties; the ways we solve problems or meet the needs
become opportunities to make our contributions, lessen burden for people,
provide comfort for them, and even make our money.
So,
you
can choose to rise from the coronavirus-inflicted pains by picking yourself up,
and looking at the bright side of life again.
All
of us have had challenges at one time or the other in life. Years ago, I had
mine. It was a setback that could have permanently downed me if I didn’t know
how to turn it into a springboard.
If you want results, and not excuses, in your career and
business in the post-COVID-19 economy, giving up now isn’t an option at all. There
are no reasons strong enough not to start again. Even if some doors were shut against you, Many
Hale, a best-selling author, advises that “Realize that if a door closed, it’s
because what was behind it wasn’t meant for you.”
I share with you just two secrets to use to get results despite
coronavirus-generated challenges.
First,
change your mindset. Our collection of
beliefs, mental inclination, and thought habits play a big role in the results
we get whether in business, career, or health. We can change our life by
changing the state of our mind; it is the state of our thoughts that build up
the state of our life.
Viktor E. Frankl, an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist
who also survived the Holocaust, believes that “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our
power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Our
mental attitudes are believed to alter our abilities.
In real terms, behind the physical difficulties and
emotional pains (fear) COVID-19 causes are opportunities for major
breakthroughs. A positive mindset will empower us to see and identify the opportunities
for new and better ways of doing business.
Second, take
practical steps. Action is the conveyor belt between thoughts and practical
results. Until you stand up and act, no situation will change.
In the words of Adam Sicinski, a life coach, “Living a
life of excuses can have dire and lasting consequences. Not only will excuses
prevent you from reaching your full potential, but they will also hold you back
from recognizing opportunities, strengths, and skills you might have that could
help you overcome your life’s problems.” People are waiting for our results,
not our excuses. So, let’s go for results, not reasons.
We meet again next week.
